Worsley's study interpreted the Melanesian movements known as cargo cults as millenarian responses to colonial domination and economic inequality. He compared them to millenarian movements elsewhere and saw them as forerunners of political nationalism. Influential for decades, it is now often read alongside later, more culturally detailed studies.
