Witches, Devils, and Doctors in the Renaissance

Johann Weyer, De praestigiis daemonum

by Johann Weyer · George Mora (ed.); John Shea (trans.)

The first complete English translation of Johann Weyer's 1563 De praestigiis daemonum, the physician's famous argument that many accused witches were deluded or melancholic rather than in league with Satan. The work also contains Weyer's discussion of demons and is closely linked with his Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, the catalogue of spirits that fed into the Goetia. Mora's introduction places Weyer in medical and religious history.
