An alphabetical encyclopedia of demons, sorcerers, superstitions and the occult, first published in Paris in 1818 and repeatedly revised. The 1863 edition added the engravings of demons after Louis Le Breton that fixed the modern image of figures such as Asmodeus, Baal and Belphegor. Written first in a sceptical Enlightenment spirit, later editions reflect the author's return to Catholicism.
