Michael Psellus on the Operation of Daemons

by Michael Psellus · Marcus Collisson (trans.); Stephen Skinner (intro.)

A reissue of Marcus Collisson's 1843 translation of the eleventh-century Byzantine dialogue On the Operation of Daemons, long attributed to Michael Psellus. Through a conversation about the Euchites, it sets out a taxonomy of daemons by element and habitat, their bodies, their powers and how they interact with people. Skinner's introduction relates it to Byzantine magic and to later grimoire demonology. A short but influential source.
