Solomonic Magic & the Grimoires

The Secrets of Solomon

A Witch's Handbook from the Trial Records of the Venetian Inquisition

by Joseph H. Peterson · Joseph H. Peterson (ed. & trans.)

A translation of a Clavicula Salomonis manuscript confiscated by the Venetian Inquisition in the 1630s, preserved among trial papers. Unlike the polished later Keys, this working copy reflects the magic of ordinary practitioners: love spells, treasure-finding, conjurations and seals. Peterson presents the Italian text with English translation and introduces the trial context, showing how Solomonic books circulated, were copied and were prosecuted. Of interest for both grimoire history and early modern Italian religious history.
