Expression, Soul Urge and Personality Numbers in Numerology

How numerology reads a name: the expression or destiny number, soul urge and personality numbers, karmic lessons and the Y rule, with a full worked example.

In modern numerology a person's full birth name yields three core numbers: the expression (or destiny) number from all its letters, the soul urge (or heart's desire) from its vowels, and the personality number from its consonants. Each letter is given a value from 1 to 9, the values are added and reduced, and the results are read as natural talents, inner motivation and outward manner respectively.

The Core Numbers of a Name§

The idea that a name has a numerical value is ancient. Hebrew gematria, Greek isopsephy and Arabic abjad all summed the numeral values of letters, and medieval onomancy used a name's value to predict the outcome of illnesses and contests. Modern numerology, created in the United States in the early twentieth century, adapted the principle to the Latin alphabet and to a psychological reading of character: see the birth of modern numerology.

In the standard system, the name supplies three of the five "core numbers" (the others being the life path and the birthday number). They are usually explained with a domestic image: the expression is the whole house, the soul urge is what happens inside, and the personality is the façade seen from the street.

Which Name to Use and How the Letters Are Counted§

Pythagorean numerology uses the full name as originally registered at birth, including all middle names, spelled exactly, even if the person has never used it. Later names (married names, nicknames, adopted names) are read separately as modifiers of the original vibration. The Chaldean system associated with Cheiro does the opposite and reads the name in current use; see Chaldean numerology.

The Pythagorean letter values are:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
A J S B K T C L U D M V E N W F O X G P Y H Q Z I R

The vowels are A, E, I, O and U. Y is the usual problem: most books count it as a vowel when it carries a vowel sound and there is no other vowel in the syllable (as in Lynn or Bryn) and as a consonant when it begins a syllable (as in Yolanda). Some authors also treat it as a vowel in endings such as Mary or Henry, while others always count it as a consonant. A few count W as a vowel when it forms part of a vowel sound, as in Andrew. These choices change the soul urge and personality numbers, though never the expression.

The Expression or Destiny Number§

The expression number, also called the destiny number or name number, is the sum of all the letters of the full birth name. It is read as the abilities and characteristic way of acting that a person brings to life, the "tools" for the road described by the life path.

Worked example: Clara Rose Bennett§

Using the Pythagorean chart:

  • CLARA: C3 + L3 + A1 + R9 + A1 = 17 → 1 + 7 = 8
  • ROSE: R9 + O6 + S1 + E5 = 21 → 2 + 1 = 3
  • BENNETT: B2 + E5 + N5 + N5 + E5 + T2 + T2 = 26 → 2 + 6 = 8

Adding the reduced names: 8 + 3 + 8 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1 + 0 = 1. Adding all the letters at once gives 64 → 10 → 1, the same digit. The expression number is 1, associated in modern numerology with independence and initiative (see number 1). Because the total passed through 19 when the names were reduced separately, numerologists who use karmic debt numbers would write it as 19/1; the convention is explained in the life path number.

As with the life path, reducing each name first is the preferred method in most books, because it reveals master numbers (11, 22, 33) inside a single name that might otherwise be lost.

The Soul Urge and Personality Numbers§

Soul urge (heart's desire)§

The soul urge is the sum of the vowels. It is said to describe inner motivation: what a person wants most, often privately. For Clara Rose Bennett:

Two, first edition volumes bound together. Written by the English scientist, physician, alchemist, and Rosicrucian, Robert Fludd (1574–1637), this encyclopedic work is broadly themed upon the macrocosm and…

  • CLARA: A1 + A1 = 2
  • ROSE: O6 + E5 = 11 (a master number within the name)
  • BENNETT: E5 + E5 = 10 → 1

2 + 11 + 1 = 14 → 5. The soul urge is 5, read as a longing for freedom, variety and experience (number 5), with the inner 11 noted as a strain of idealism or intuition.

Personality§

The personality number is the sum of the consonants. It is said to describe the outward impression a person gives, the manner others see before they know someone well. For the same name:

  • CLARA: C3 + L3 + R9 = 15 → 6
  • ROSE: R9 + S1 = 10 → 1
  • BENNETT: B2 + N5 + N5 + T2 + T2 = 16 → 7

6 + 1 + 7 = 14 → 5.

A useful check: the soul urge and personality must together reduce to the expression (5 + 5 = 10 → 1). If they do not, a letter has been miscounted. A numerologist would note here that inner desire and outward manner share the same number, and that both conflict to some degree with the independent, directive 1 of the expression; the reading is built from such agreements and tensions.

Karmic Lessons, Hidden Passion and Other Name Numbers§

Beyond the three core totals, many books tabulate how often each value occurs in the name, sometimes called the inclusion chart.

  • Karmic lessons are the numbers that do not appear at all. Clara Rose Bennett has no letters worth 4, 7 or 8, which would be read as lessons in method and discipline (4), reflection (7) and the handling of money and authority (8). The term comes from the same late twentieth-century current that produced karmic debt numbers, which combined numerology with the doctrine of reincarnation.
  • Hidden passion is the most frequent number. Here 5 occurs five times (E, N, N, E, E), reinforcing the 5 of the soul urge and personality.
  • The balance number, the sum of the initials (C3 + R9 + B2 = 14 → 5), is said to show how a person responds to difficulty.
  • The maturity number adds the life path and the expression. If Clara was born on 23 July 1968 (life path 9), her maturity number is 9 + 1 = 10 → 1, said to describe the direction of later life.

These secondary numbers vary a good deal from author to author, and some numerologists ignore them.

Name Changes, Married Names and Criticism§

Because numerology treats the name as a vibration, it has always had a practical side: advice on choosing a child's name, a pen name, a stage name or a business name whose total is considered favourable. Pythagorean writers usually hold that the birth name remains the foundation and that a new name adds a layer of influence; Chaldean practitioners, especially in India, recommend changing the spelling of the name in use, sometimes by adding or doubling a letter.

Critics point to the arbitrariness that the method itself reveals. The value of a letter depends on its position in a modern alphabet; the count changes with spelling, transliteration and the treatment of Y; and the same name gives different answers in the Pythagorean and Chaldean systems. The mathematician Underwood Dudley showed how easily numerical "meanings" can be found when many alternative calculations are available. Numerologists generally reply that the numbers are symbols for reflection rather than measurements. Frequently asked questions§

What is the difference between the expression number and the life path number?§

The expression number comes from the letters of the full birth name and is read as a person's abilities and way of acting. The life path comes from the birth date and is read as the main direction and lessons of life.

Is Y a vowel in numerology?§

It depends on the author. Most count Y as a vowel when it sounds like one and there is no other vowel in the syllable, and as a consonant at the start of a syllable; some treat it as a consonant always. The choice affects the soul urge and personality numbers but not the expression.

Should I use my married name or my birth name?§

Pythagorean numerology uses the full birth name for the core numbers and reads a married or adopted name as an additional influence. The Chaldean system uses the name a person is currently known by.

What are karmic lessons in numerology?§

Karmic lessons are the numbers from 1 to 9 that do not appear among the letter values of the birth name. Modern numerologists read them as qualities a person must develop in this life; the idea is a recent addition to the system.
