Personal Year Number: How to Calculate Years, Months and Days
How to calculate your personal year, personal month and personal day numbers in numerology, with worked examples, the nine-year cycle and each year's meaning.
A personal year number is numerology's forecasting tool: the birth day and birth month are added to the digits of the current calendar year and reduced to a number from 1 to 9, which places a person somewhere in a repeating nine-year cycle of beginnings, growth and completion. Personal months and personal days subdivide the year in the same way, and together they form the timing system of modern numerology.
The Nine-Year Cycle in Numerology§
Modern numerology treats life as a succession of nine-year cycles. Each year carries the character of one number from 1 to 9, and the sequence always runs in order: a 1 year of starting out is followed by a 2 year of patience and partnership, and so on until a 9 year of ending and release prepares for a new 1. Because the cycle advances by one each calendar year, anyone can tell from a single calculation where they stand and what the following years will bring.
The idea of periodic cycles in human life is ancient. Greek medical and philosophical writers divided life into periods of seven years, and the Pythagorean and Christian traditions associated nine and ten with completion; see Pythagoras and Pythagorean number mysticism. The specific nine-year personal cycle, however, belongs to the American system created in the early twentieth century and set out clearly in Florence Campbell's Your Days Are Numbered (1931); see the birth of modern numerology.
How to Calculate Your Personal Year Number§
Add the day and month of birth to the current calendar year, then reduce.

Example 1: born 14 March, in the year 2026§
- Birth month 3; birth day 14 → 1 + 4 = 5; year 2026 → 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10 → 1.
- 3 + 5 + 1 = 9. The personal year is 9.
- In 2027 the same person will be in a 1 personal year, and in 2028 a 2.
Example 2: born 29 November, in the year 2026§
- All digits: 2 + 9 + 1 + 1 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 23 → 5.
- Reducing each part: 29 → 11, November 11, 2026 → 1; 11 + 11 + 1 = 23 → 5. Same answer.
As with the life path number, different ways of adding always produce the same final digit; they can differ only over whether a master number such as 11 or 22 appears along the way. Many numerologists reduce master numbers in personal years for simplicity, while others note an 11 or 22 year as a period of heightened intensity; see master numbers 11, 22 and 33.
A shortcut: the personal year always equals the universal year (the digit sum of the calendar year) plus the digits of the birth day and month. For a given person, the number simply rises by one each year, so once it is known for one year the rest of the cycle follows.
Personal Months and Personal Days§
Personal months§
Add the personal year number to the number of the calendar month (January = 1 … December = 12, reduced to 3), then reduce.
For the person born on 14 March in their 9 personal year of 2026:
- October (10 → 1): 9 + 1 = 1, a personal month of new initiatives within a year of endings.
- November (11 → 2): 9 + 2 = 11, which reduces to 2. Adding 9 + 11 = 20 → 2 gives the same base digit.
Personal months therefore form a nine-month sequence nested within the year, and numerologists read them as sub-themes coloured by the year's number.
Personal days§
Add the personal month number to the calendar day, then reduce. For the same person on 4 October 2026: personal month 1 + day 4 = 5, a day associated with change and movement. Personal days are the finest grain of numerological timing and are mostly used for choosing dates for meetings, journeys or signatures.
The Meaning of Each Personal Year§
The following summaries reflect the consensus of twentieth-century and present-day numerology books. Each echoes the general meaning of the number, described on the site's numerology pages.

- 1 personal year: beginnings, initiative, planting seeds; a time to start projects and act independently.
- 2 personal year: patience, cooperation, relationships; slow growth beneath the surface; diplomacy over force.
- 3 personal year: expression, creativity, social life; a lighter year of communication and enjoyment.
- 4 personal year: work, foundations, order; consolidation, budgeting and discipline.
- 5 personal year: change, freedom, travel; the midpoint of the cycle, often described as a turning point.
- 6 personal year: home, family, responsibility; commitments, care for others, domestic decisions.
- 7 personal year: reflection, study, rest; an inward year for spiritual or intellectual work rather than expansion.
- 8 personal year: achievement, authority, finance; the harvest of effort, recognition, practical power.
- 9 personal year: completion, release, compassion; closing chapters and clearing space before a new 1.
Numerologists usually stress that these are tendencies to work with rather than events that will happen. A 9 year is not said to bring loss, but to favour finishing and letting go; an 8 year does not guarantee money but is described as a time when effort and reward are more closely linked. Numerology, like other forms of divination, is no substitute for financial, medical or legal advice.
Universal Years and When the Personal Year Begins§
The universal year is the digit sum of the calendar year alone and is said to describe the collective mood. 2025 was a universal 9 year (2 + 0 + 2 + 5 = 9), 2026 is a universal 1 year (2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10 → 1), and 2027 will be an 11 or 2 year. Universal months and days are calculated in the same way without the birth data.
There is a genuine disagreement over when a personal year begins. The majority view, found in most popular books, is that personal years run from 1 January to 31 December, in step with the calendar year. A minority hold that the personal year begins on the birthday, as a solar return does in astrology, so that the months between 1 January and the birthday are a transition. Some writers describe a gradual change of influence from about September, as the coming year's number "comes in". Each approach can be found in respected numerology literature.
Personal Years Beside Other Timing Systems§
The personal year resembles other methods that divide life into repeating periods from the birth date. In Hellenistic astrology, annual profections advance the focus of the chart by one house each year in a twelve-year cycle; the astrological solar return casts a chart for the moment the sun returns to its birth position; tarot practitioners derive a year card from the same digit sum as the personal year but reduced to 22 or less; the Chinese calendar assigns each year an animal and element in a sixty-year cycle; and Vedic astrology divides life into planetary periods (dashas), described in Vedic astrology.
The site's Birthday Oracle sets several of these side by side: enter a birth date and it gives the personal year with its meaning, the tarot year card, the annual profection, the transits of Jupiter and Saturn, the Chinese year and the Vedic dashas. The birthday calculator gives the fixed numbers, such as the life path.
As with all numerology, there is no evidence that personal years forecast events. Their appeal lies in offering a simple, orderly rhythm for reflection and planning: a story of beginnings, growth and endings told in nine steps. For the system as a whole see Numerology: A Complete Guide.
Frequently asked questions§
How do I calculate my personal year number?§
Add your birth day, your birth month and the digits of the current year, then reduce the total to a single digit. For example, someone born on 14 March has a personal year of 3 + 5 + 1 = 9 in 2026.
Does the personal year start on 1 January or on my birthday?§
Most numerologists use the calendar year, from 1 January. Some begin it on the birthday, and others describe the new number gradually taking effect in the last months of the old year.
What is a 9 personal year?§
A 9 personal year is the last in the nine-year cycle, associated with completion, release and compassion. Numerologists describe it as a time to finish projects and let go of what is no longer needed before a new 1 year.
What is the universal year for 2026?§
2026 reduces to 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 10, then 1, so it is a universal 1 year, associated with new beginnings. 2027 is an 11 or 2 year.
